NEWTON (Isaac). Philosophiæ naturalis principia mathematica, perpetuis commentariis illustrata. Geneva, Barrillot & fils, 1739-1742. 4 volumes in-4, spotted calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First "Jesuit" edition, published by the Minim brothers Thomas Leseur and François Jacquier.
This Swiss edition, based on the third edition of Newton's Principia mathematica, is particularly interesting for the important commentaries by Jean-Louis Calandrini. The last volume also contains three treatises on the ebb and flow of the sea by Bernoulli, Maclaurin and Euler.
The work is illustrated with a repeated title vignette, engraved by Daudet after Delamonce, and numerous figures in the text.
Ex-dono from the École Polytechnique to the École d'Artillerie et du Génie and stamps of both institutions.
Bindings a little rubbed, hinges cracked, spine faded, missing headpieces.
