Description
[NEWTON (Isaac). VOLTAIRE: Elemens de la philosophie de Neuton [sic] mis à la portée de tout le monde. Amsterdam, Étienne Ledet & Cie, 1738. In-8, mottled calf, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, inner lace, red edges (period binding). First edition, addressed to Étienne Ledet; there is an edition addressed to Jacques Desbordes. The illustration consists of an allegorical frontispiece by L.-F. Dubourg, a portrait of Voltaire after M.-Q. de La Tour, 7 plates out of text, 58 figures in the text and numerous vignettes and culs-de-lampe, all engraved by Jacob Folkema, Morellon de La Cave, Bernard Picart and Jacob van der Schley. Voltaire left his mark on the history of the exact sciences in France with this work, in which he introduced the French public for the first time to the essential scientific theories of the great English physicist. He dedicated the book to Émilie du Châtelet, his mistress, who helped him write it and whose translation of Newton's Principia mathematica, begun in 1745 but published posthumously in 1756, is still an authority today. The last three chapters were written by an anonymous Dutch mathematician. Handwritten bookplate of Turcay de Petiteville, clerk in Le Mans, dated 1752. Small loss on one spine, corners dulled. Bengesco, n°1570 - Cohen, 1037.
