Description
PEUERBACH (Georg von). Theoricæ novæ planetarum. Paris, Charles Périer, 1555. In-8, stiff vellum, smooth spine, mottled edges (Binding of the period). An important astronomical treatise on the planets, which remained a reference manual until Copernicus. This rare Paris edition is illustrated with numerous wood-engraved figures, including 3 fold-out plates and 2 scroll figures complete with their moving parts. The Austrian astronomer and mathematician Georg von Peuerbach (1423-1461), a precursor of the Copernican system, was called upon successively by the universities of Ferrara, Bologna and Padua to teach astronomy. On his return to Vienna, he was appointed to the chair of mathematics, which he held until his death. He is credited with correcting the Latin translation of Ptolemy's treatise. Slight restorations to the binding, some foxing and minor paper repairs, light wetness at the foot. Lalande, 77 - HL, 2252 - Kanas, 3.8.1.
