SACROBOSCO (Joannes de). Sphæra emendata. Eliæ Vineti Santonis scholia in eandem Sphæram, ab ipso auctore restituta. Paris, Jérôme de Marnef and the widow of Guillaume Cavellat, 1577. In-8, limp vellum, traces of binding (contemporary binding). A rare and well-printed Paris edition of this key medieval treatise on astronomy, written in the 13th century by the English mathematician Joannes de Sacrobosco (John de Holywood). It is enriched with scholia by the philologist Élie Vinet and accompanied by a supplement by Giovan Pietro Pierio Valeriano and an ospucula on climates by Pedro Nuñez. Extensive wood-engraved illustrations including numerous cosmological figures, zodiacs and diagrams in the text, including three volvelles complete with their movable parts, on ff. 12, 13 and 24, and two folding out-of-text tables. An attractive copy in first condition. Light spotting, one quire partially detached, stains on the binding not serious. Lalande, 103 - HL, 1657 - Adams H-734.
