Description
SECCHI (Angelo). The Sun. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1875-1877. 2 volumes in-8 and an atlas small in-4, plum half-chagrin, gilt heads, untrimmed (Period binding). Second enlarged edition, published the same year as the original, of this very important work by the Jesuit astronomer Angelo Secchi (1818-1878), who was director of the Observatory of the Collegio Romano. The work is illustrated with 13 plates out of text, including 12 in colour, and 280 illustrations in the text, some in colour. The atlas contains 6 double-page plates of spectroscopy. A fine, fresh copy, complete with the atlas, which is often missing. From the library of the Château de La Plagne (2013, n°242), with bookplate. Also by the same author: Les Étoiles.
