CUREAU DE LA CHAMBRE (Marin). Les Characteres des passions. Amsterdam, Antoine Michel [Louis and Daniel Elzévier], 1658-1663. 5 volumes in 4 volumes small in-12, red morocco, double gilt fillet with fleuron at the corners, ornate smooth spine, gilt inner fillet, gilt edges (19th century binding). A very fine Elzevirian edition, with a title-frontispiece dated 1658. Les Caractères des passions is the masterpiece of Marin Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669), physician to Chancellor Séguier and Louis XIV, philosopher and adviser to the king. The first two volumes were published in Paris in 1640; the next three in 1662. Rubbing, spine slightly sunned, some foxing. Willems, n°1233.
