ELZEVIER. - Set of three works. ▪ SALLUSTE. [Opera] cum veterum historicorum fragmentis. Leiden, Elzevier, 1634. Small in-12, long-grained red morocco, gilt or dotted fillet framing, smooth threaded spine, interior roulette, gilt edges (19th-century English binding). First Elzevier edition, edited by Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn, presented in the third edition under this date. It is decorated with a title-frontispiece engraved by Cornelis Duysend and a portrait in the text. A ruled copy, very wide margins (140 x 75 mm), of this book of which "fine copies are 126 to 128 mm high", according to Willems. From the libraries of John Thorold at Syston Park, Cecil Thompson and Austin Smith, with bookplates. Some foxing; angular repair to f. N12. - Willems, n°412. ▪ VIRGILE. Opera ; nunc emendatiora. First printing of this "typographical masterpiece" (Willems), recognisable by two passages printed in red, which are in black in the two reprints under the same date. A well-established copy of the same provenance. The front of the 8th leaf does include the end of the list of consuls, but the folded genealogical table is missing, as is often the case.
