Description
MOLIÈRE. Works of J. B. P. Moliere. Tome premier. Paris, Gabriel Quinet, 1664. In-12, brown calf, ornate spine, spotted edges (period binding). A precious and extremely rare collection of one of the very first attempts at a collective facsimile edition of Molière's works. All these essays are extremely rare, and of the three published in 1664, Gabriel Quinet's is the only one to contain plays in first edition. The first volume alone contains two plays in first edition: L'Estourdy and Dépit amoureux. As for the second volume, which for a long time was thought never to have been printed, only three copies are known to exist. Under a general title, this volume brings together four plays published separately, the first three addressed to Gabriel Quinet and the last to Augustin Courbé: (1) L'Estourdy ou les contre-temps. Paris, Gabriel Quinet, 1663. First edition, with the characteristics of the B edition, in which certain typographical errors of the A edition are corrected. Guibert, I, 94 - Riffaud, n°6353. (2) Depit amoureux. Paris, Gabriel Quinet, 1663. First edition. There was only one printing of this first edition. Guibert, I, 108 - Riffaud, n°6356. (3) Les Précieuses ridicules. Paris, Gabriel Quinet, 1663. Second edition. The issue by Gabriel Quinet is extremely rare, the one by Claude Barbin is more common. Guibert, I, 25 - Riffaud, n°6372. (4) Sganarelle, ou Le Cocu imaginaire. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1662. Third edition, divided into three issues under the names of G. Quinet, G. de Luyne and A. Courbé. The issue by Augustin Courbé is absolutely rare. It is unknown to Guibert, I, 44, n°7 - Riffaud, n°6261. Original binding skilfully restored, small very marginal worm damage to sections A and B, not affecting the text. Lacroix, n°265 - Guibert, II, 559 - Riffaud, Catalogue Molière, n°6437 - Diesbach, Bonna, XVIIe s., n°197 - Tchemerzine, IV, 820.
