Description
SCHOTT (Gaspar). Technica curiosa, sive mirabius artis, libris XII. Nürnberg, Würzburg, J. Hertz für W. M. Endter, 1664. 2 volumes in-4, marbled basane, black chagrin titles and endpapers, speckled edges (Binding of the period). First edition. It is illustrated with a frontispiece and 60 plates outside the text, 18 of which are fold-outs or double-page spreads, as well as figures in the text. This work by the German Jesuit Gaspar Schott (1608-1666) follows on from his Physica curiosa of 1662. His ambition was to bring together the state of knowledge in the various fields of technology, a term he is said to have coined. Of great documentary value thanks to its rigorous descriptions of the scientific instruments of the time, the work is divided into twelve books on pneumatics, with an account of Otto von Guericke's experiment with vacuum spheres, hydraulics, mechanics, cryptography, optics and the Kabbalah. There is also a description of the first underwater diving bell, as well as Boyle's and Torricelli's experiments on atmospheric pressure. Rubbing, two hinges cracked, modern title-pieces, headpieces missing, foxing.
