Description
BAUMÉ (Antoine). Chymie expérimentale et raisonnée. Paris, Didot le jeune, 1773. 3 volumes in-8, marbled calf, framed with a cold fillet, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). This is the first and best edition of the two published under this date.
It is illustrated with a portrait-frontispiece engraved by Saint-Aubin after Cochin, three title vignettes engraved by Le Veau after Moreau and twelve folding plates representing experimental devices.
La Chymie expérimentale et raisonnée is the major work by Antoine Baumé (1728-1804), "one of the most distinguished chemists of the eighteenth century" according to Duveen, whose research covered all aspects of chemistry, but was not confined to the theory of this science, since he was also interested in experimental technology and its application to industry. He also wrote a Dissertation sur l'éther (1757), a Manuel et un Cours de chimie (1763 and 1767) and Élémens de Pharmacie théorique et pratique (1762).
Bindings a little rubbed, a few small wormholes on the spines, one headband missing, scattered pale freckles.
Duveen, I, 83-84.
