Description
[FESTIVALS]. Description des festes donnés par la ville de Paris à l'occasion du mariage de Mme Louise-Elisabeth de France et de Dom Philippe, Infant et Grand Amiral d'Espagne, les 29e et 30e août 1739. Paris, P. G. Le Mercier, 1740, large folio, half marbled basane with corners, smooth spine, green morocco title (period binding). The only edition of this sumptuous festive book commemorating the marriage of Madame Première, the eldest daughter of Louis XV, to the Infante Philippe of Spain, the youngest son of Philippe V, on 26 August 1739. The festivities took place on an artificial island built by the Italian architect Servandoni between the Pont Royal and the Pont Neuf, in front of the Louvre. Sixty illuminated boats gave the signal for fireworks, sea monster battles, torrents of fire and water and a "cradle of stars".
One of the finest illustrated festival books of the 18th century, it features a title vignette by Bouchardon engraved by Soubeyran, a header by Rigaud depicting a naval joust on the Seine and 13 majestic plates, 5 full-page and 8 double-page, engraved by Blondel after Bonel, Gabriel, Sallet and Servandoni. Particularly noteworthy are the two famous views of the fireworks display on the Seine and the decorations and illuminations in the salons of the Hôtel-de-Ville. The verso of the last plate is laminated with a large painted decoration of flowers and architectural friezes.
Modest copy, binding slightly worn and worn, small tears without missing some plates, marginal loss to the plate of the illuminations of the Seine.
Cohen, 288 - Mourey, 210-222 - Vinet, n°519 (erroneous collation) - Ruggieri, n°570.
