Description
FOURCROY (Antoine-François). [Tableaux synoptiques de chimie pour servir de résumé aux leçons données sur cette science dans les écoles de Paris]. S.l.n.n. [Paris, Baudoin], an VIII [1800]. In-folio, pink paper-covered boards, title page in chagrin (later binding). First edition of this rare didactic work, consisting of twelve full-sized synoptic tables presenting the basic concepts of chemistry, preceded by an explanatory note. "A very scarce work, probably due to the fact that the tables were frequently torn out to be stuck on the walls of lecture theatres" (Duveen). The eminent chemist and physician Fourcroy (1755-1809), a member of the French National Convention, played an active role in the development of scientific education by helping to found the Institut national des sciences et arts and the future École polytechnique, where he taught. He was also director of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in 1800-1801 and 1804-1805. Missing the 11 pp. of introductory text (false title, title and notice). Binding abraded, spine unstained. Ferguson, I, 287 - Duveen, 226.
