[GARDENS]. Two collections of six works on the art of gardens at the end of the 18th century. I. [Gardens]. 4 works in one vol. in-8, fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed (Binding circa 1800). Contains: 1° WATELET (Claude-Henri). Essay on gardens. Paris, Prault, Saillant & Nyon, Pissot, 1774. Second printing, first edition of this important work, in which the new taste for natural or picturesque gardens emerges against the old hegemony of formal gardens. It includes a description of Moulin-Joly, Watelet's property in Colombes, which was one of the very first Anglo-Chinese gardens. - 2° WATELET (Claude-Henri). La Maison de campagne à la mode, ou la comédie d'après nature. Paris, Prault, 1784. Rare first edition of this comedy in two acts, in prose, composed in 1777 by Watelet (1718-1786). - 3° [LIGNE (Charles-Joseph de)]. Coup-d'œil sur Belœil et sur une grande partie des jardins de l'Europe. Belœil, and Brussels, F. Hayez, 1786. Second edition revised and enlarged by the author, printed in Brussels; the original was printed in 1781 on the private presses of the Château de Belœil, fief of the House of Ligne. - 4° LE PRIEUR (J.-C.). Description of a part of the valley of Montmorenci, and its most pleasant gardens. Tempé, and Paris, Le Jay, 1788. Second edition, decorated with 19 curious plates, including 3 fold-outs, drawn by Benoit (1), Lepagelet (2), the Countess d'Albon (4) and F.-Marie de Lussy (12), and engraved by Benoit and Lepagelet. The penultimate plate depicts an aerostat (Cohen, 625, describes 19 plates for the original of 1784 and 25 for this one, whose title announces : Ornée de dix-neuf gravures). Minor rubbing to headpieces, scattered foxing. II [Theory of gardens]. 2 works in one vol. in-8, half olive basane, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed (Binding circa 1800). Contains: 1° [MOREL (Jean-Marie)]. Théorie des jardins. Paris, Pissot, 1776. First edition of this important work by landscape architect Jean-Marie Morel (1728-1810), who designed more than forty English-style parks and gardens, including those at Ermenonville, Guiscard, Malmaison and Château d'Arcelot. - 2° [LEZAY-MARNÉZIA (Claude-François-Adrien)]. Happiness in the countryside. Neufchâtel, and Paris, Prault, 1785. Rare first edition. Minor rubbing to the headpieces, some foxing.
