PLUTARCH. Les Vies des hommes illustres, revues sur les mss. et traduites en françois, avec des remarques historiques et critiques... par M. Dacier. Paris, Clousier, Gosselin, Coustelier puis Paulus-du-Mesnil, 1721-1734. 9 volumes in-4, fawn-coloured basane, decorated spine, red titles and gospels, marbled edges (period binding). First complete edition of the French translation by André Dacier (1651-1722). The great Hellenist had published a first draft in a single volume in 1694.
The edition is decorated with a band at the head of the dedication and a medallion portrait at the beginning of each life.
A complete copy of all nine volumes, with wide margins and on fine paper. The eighth volume contains a Life of Plutarch and a Chronology by André Dacier, and the ninth, Les Vies des hommes illustres omises par Plutarque traduites de l'anglais de Thomas Rowe par l'abbé Bellenger. This last volume is a little smaller than the others, but comes from the same set of bindings.
Epidermure on the boards, damaged headpieces, some foxing.
