Description
RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme). Le Paysan perverti, ou les dangers de la ville. Histoire récente, mise au jour d'après les véritables lettres des personnages. The Hague and Paris, Esprit, 1776 [1782]. 8 parts in 4 volumes in-12, red half morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated, daffodil edges (Binding circa 1800). First illustrated edition of the author's novelistic masterpiece. This is the last of four successive editions of Le Paysan perverti published between 1776 and 1782, all with the date 1776. This one was certainly published by Restif himself, who had the figures engraved. The illustration consists of 82 out-of-text figures engraved by Jacques Le Roy and Louis Berthet after drawings by Louis Binet, including a frontispiece at the head of each part. A pleasant copy in contemporary bindings. Two plates missing (one in vol. 2 and one in vol. 3). Minor wear to bindings, scattered foxing and spotting. Lacroix, XIV, n°5 - Rives-Child, XIV, n°10 - Cohen, 873.
