Description
[SENAULT (Louis). Hours presented to Madame la Dauphine. Paris, Théodore de Hansy, s.d. [circa 1745]. In-8, red morocco, wide gilt iron lace, garlands at the corners, ornate spine, inner lace, starred paper endpapers, gilt edges (period binding). This famous book of hours, entirely engraved on copper, was originally published around 1680 by the calligrapher Louis Senault under the title Heures nouvelles tirées de la Sainte Écriture. This new edition is dedicated to Maria Theresa of Spain, dauphin of France from her marriage to Louis of France in February 1745 until her death in July 1746. It is decorated with a fine title-frontispiece bearing her coat of arms and six plates engraved by Soubeyran and Raymond after paintings by Le Sueur, Dulin, Coypel, Guido Reni, Ph. de Champaigne and Mignard. The text, beautifully calligraphed within a double framed border of fillets, is embellished with numerous ornaments: ornate capitals, historiated lettering, vignettes, fleurons, culs-de-lampe, flowery garlands, pen-and-ink calligraphy, etc. A very fine copy in contemporary morocco. Cohen, 487.
