Description
TORNÉ (Pierre-Anastase). Funeral oration of Louis XV, King of France and Navarre, nicknamed the Beloved, delivered in Tarbe before the Assembly of the States of Bigorre on 10 December 1774. Tarbes, Mathieu Roquemaurel, 1774. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, smooth spine decorated, inner lace, gilt edges (period binding). Extremely rare first edition, printed in Tarbes, where Father Torné (1727-1797), chaplain to King Stanislas in Nancy and future constitutional bishop of Cher, was born and where he delivered this funeral oration for King Louis XV before the States of Bigorre. Desgraves lists only three copies of this book, preserved in the BnF, Pau and Tarbes (incomplete), to which must be added the one in the Arsenal. A very fine copy in red morocco with the arms of a contemporary. From the libraries of A. Renaud (1825-1897) and Count René Philipon (1870-1936), with bookplates. One leaf rebacked with angular repair (pp. 137-138). Desgraves, Répertoire, II, 102, n°29 - OHR, 219 (unidentified arms reproduced from this copy).
