BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE (Jacques-Henri). Paul et Virginie. Paris, L. Curmer, 1838. Large in-8, red chagrin, boards decorated with a rich oriental gilt decoration, central medallion in reserve, smooth spine decorated in the same way, inner lace, gilt edges, slipcase (publisher's binding). A magnificent and very famous edition, considered to be one of the finest productions of the Romantic period.
The illustration consists of around 450 wood-engraved vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot, Français, Meissonier, Paul Huet, Isabey, Marville, Steinheil, etc., and 37 plates outside the text on laid chine protected by printed serpents, including 29 wood-engraved figures, 7 steel-engraved portraits and a coloured map of Mauritius.

A very fine copy in an admirable publisher's binding decorated with the famous "Indian-style" plate, specially designed for this edition by the king's bookbinder René Simier.
