GAMACHES (Étienne-Simon de). Astronomie physique, ou Principes généraux de la nature appliqués au mécanisme astronomique et comparés aux Principes de la philosophie de M. Newton. Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1740, in-4, brown marbled calf, supralibris École du corps royal de l'artillerie de Douay gilt on the first plate, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition. It is illustrated with 22 folding plates out of text, plus a title vignette, 11 bandeaux and 8 culs-de-lampe by Cochin. The dedication to the Count of Maurepas includes a vignette engraved with his coat of arms. This treatise consists of nine dissertations on the nature and laws of motion, the principles of Newton's philosophy, the theory of the planets, relative motion and attraction, in which the author defends Descartes' system of nature against that of Newton, which Voltaire and Mme du Châtelet were spreading in France. Étienne-Simon de Gamaches (1672-1756), canon of Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie, was an astronomer, a member of the Académie des sciences, and also a moralist.
