LA CAILLE (Nicolas-Louis de). Journal historique du voyage fait au Cap de Bonne-Espérance. Paris, Guillyn, 1763. In-12, marbled calf, cold fillet, smooth spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition, illustrated with three woodcut vignettes and a fold-out map of the Cape. Abbé de La Caille left for the Cape in 1750 to observe the stars in the southern hemisphere. He returned to Paris in 1754 and died a year before the publication of his book. His journal includes a description of Rio de Janeiro, the islands of France (Mauritius) and Ascension, remarks on the Hottentots, etc. Corners slightly dulled, hinges cracked, minor rubbing to spine, small loss to title page.
