Description
LAPLACE (Pierre-Simon de). Exposition du système du monde. Paris, Imprimerie du Cercle-Social, an IV [1796]. 2 volumes in-8, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition.
A "veritable epitome of the scientific spirit of the Age of Enlightenment" (Marco Segala), this famous work sets out the state of cosmological knowledge at the end of the 18th century, based on the progress made in astronomy and mechanics. Its five parts deal successively with the apparent and real movements of celestial bodies, the laws of motion, universal gravity and, finally, the history of astronomy.
The Exposition contains the author's famous nebular theory. "In the sixth, and last, chapter of Book V, Laplace introduced a speculation on the origin of the solar system and another on the nature of the universe beyond its confines." (DSB).
Laplace published five editions of the work during his lifetime and prepared the last, published posthumously in 1835.
Minor rubbing, rare brown spots.
HL, 8940 - DSB, XV, 343.
