HARAUCOURT (Edmond) - (with the suite of lithographs by Georges VILLA). Le Sir de Chambley (Edmond H...) - La légende des sexes - Poèmes hystériques. Printed in Brussels for the author, [Nevers], 1882 (1883). In-8, 147-(1 bl.) pp, 2 ff, bound in red morocco, gilt fillets on the edges, binding lined with a broad morocco band, silk spine and endpaper, upper edge gilt, covers and spine preserved, bordered slipcase. Binding by Jean Lambert, active in Paris between 1935 and 1955. First edition with a suite of drawings by Georges Villa, an illustrated menu and a fine autograph letter. This collection of poems was published in 1883 in Nevers while the author was staying there as editor-manager of the newspaper "La République". On verso of false title: "Il a été tiré de cet ouvrage 200 ex. en 2 séries et 12 ex. sur Japon. These volumes, all numbered and initialled by the author, cannot be sold. This is copy no. 33 of the second series on laid paper. The "achevé d'imprimer" indicates 15 April 1883, the cover is dated 1882. Dutel, 444, gives the second series on wove paper (!), Pia 765. This copy contains the suite of 12 original lithographs by Georges Villa, coloured, printed at 60 copies on Japon for the Société des Bibliophiles du Cornet in 1930, as well as the illustrated menu of the dinner given on the occasion of the publication of this suite on 4 November 1930. Carteret II-245 "In addition to the published works, the society publishes each year either a yearbook or a suite of engravings as was the case for Edmond Haraucourt's famous work: La Légende des siècles [...] intended to be attached to the rare Brussels first edition." Slipcase rubbed at edges, slight rubbing at spine and joins, a very good copy.
