Before succeeding Bishop Laval, the first bishop of Quebec, Saint-Vallier decided in 1685 to make a reconnaissance trip to Canada to examine the state of his future diocese. During his 18-month journey, he visited numerous missions and parishes, particularly along the St Lawrence and as far as Acadia. On his return, he recorded his experiences in a letter to a friend. Written in straightforward language, the book takes us into the day-to-day life of his encounters with missionaries, Indian tribes and soldiers, full of historical and ethnographic details (capture of Dutch garrisons, life of fishermen and farmers). One cannot help but regret his discourse and his actions, which were marked by a very rigorous religious practice. A rare work.
