In the first part of Jérôme Paturot's adventures "in search of a social position" Louis Reybaud satirised French society under the government that emerged from the July Revolution, and his hero, after dabbling in Saint-Simonism, became a journalist, a member of the National Guard, etc., and finally a member of parliament. In his engravings, Grandville caricatured some of the leading figures of the time, including Berlioz, who is depicted conducting one of his works with the caption "concert de Mitraille"! The novel was a phenomenal success when it came out, and was reprinted many times. In the second part of his adventures, Paturot found himself in the aftermath of the February Days of 1848 and, like everyone else, had set his sights on becoming a "government official".
