Rheims, Jean de Foigny, 1574. Small in-4 in a damaged 18th century full calf binding (1st plate detached), but interior in good condition - [10 ff.], 132 ff. François de Rosières was born in 1534 in Bar-le-Duc, into a family that had long served the Ducal States. Destined for the Church from childhood, he became successively canon and grand archdeacon of Toul, vicar-general of the same bishopric from 1560, prothonotary and master of the petitions of the Cardinal of Lorraine and chaplain of Metz cathedral in 1580. In addition to his ecclesiastical duties, he joined the private council of Duke Charles III from 1582. His legal training also enabled him to take part in the commission responsible for drawing up the statutes for the Faculty of Jurisprudence in Pont-à-Mousson in 1587. The publication of his Stemmatum Lotharingiae ac Barri ducum tomi septem (1580), dealing with the genealogy of the Dukes of Lorraine and Bar, triggered anger in France in 1582, which saw it as a work discrediting the royal family. Arrested and imprisoned in Toul in December 1582 on charges of lèse-majesté, he was transferred to the Bastille. Although he was eventually pardoned by the King, he had to undergo a humiliating pardon session, the minutes of which were widely circulated in 1583. François de Rosières remained in great favour with Duke Charles III until his death, to whom he gave the French translation of his Stemmata in 1606 (cf. Alain Cullière).
