Description
Fichet, R.P. Alexandre. - Les Saintes reliques de l'Erothée en la sainte vie de la mère Jeanne Françoise de Fremiot, baronne de Chantal, première supérieure et fondatrice de l'ordre de la Visitation Sainte-Marie. Excellent original of holiness and true portrait of the bride of Jesus. Lyon, Vincent de Coeursillys, 1662 [1643]. In-4 bound in brown morocco, double framed in gilt lace and fillets, large gilt fleurons at the corners, gilt diamond motif in small irons at the centre of the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt edges. - Minor scuffing of leather on boards, tail cap rubbed, interior very slightly faded. - 8 ff. n. o. ], 919-[7]-126-[4] pp, portrait of Reverend Mother Jeanne de Chantal. Handwritten bookplate: "Ce livre est du monastère de la visitation Ste Marie de Moulins". - A first-issue copy, one of the few known with the date 1662, the title having been immediately replaced by a relay title with the correct date 1643. This biography of Jeanne de Chantal was the first to be published, two years after her death, and is one of the most interesting and well-documented sources on the life of the founder of the Visitation nuns and friend of Saint François de Sales. The bookplate shows that the work was owned by the community of Visitation nuns in Moulins, where Jeanne de Chantal died in 1641. This is a very precious copy, with a beautiful binding in the manner of Le Gascon.
