Description
Collection of works on music. 1/ - Rousseau, J.J. - Dictionnaire de musique. Genève, 1781. 2 volumes in-8, 20th century havana half calf, gilt fleur-de-lys on first board, slightly faded decorated ribbed spine, orange morocco title-pieces, marbled paper covers preserved, pale foxing and spotting - 524 pp, tear to one leaf not missing; 367 pp. 18 folding plates of notated music (5 folding plates of the main arias from Le Devin de Village and 13 plates), lacking false title, title dusty. The success of the Devin de Village has lasted right up to the present day, and this Dictionnaire de musique is interesting both for the observations Rousseaul makes and for the polemical, even pamphleteering considerations it contains, particularly against Rameau and French music in general. 2/ - Grove, Sir George. - Grove's Dictionary of music and musicians. Edited by J.A. Fuller Maitland. Philadelphia, Theodor Presser, 1918-1920. 6 volumes in-8 (the 6th volume is an "American Supplement"), fawn morocco half-basin, decorated smooth spines, gilt fleururette on the first cover, gilt heads (Randeynes binding) - xi pp, [2 ff.], 804 pp; vii, pp, [2 ff.], 797 pp; vii pp, [1 f.], 863 pp; [2 ff.], vii, 808 pp, [1 f.]; viii pp, [1 f.], 674 pp, [1 f.]; vi pp, [1 f.], 411 pp, [1 p.], hors-texte illustrations, notated music and in-text vignettes. "Grove's, a monumental encyclopaedia of music first published under the direction of the English musicologist George Grove from 1879, then coordinated by Alexander Fuller Maitland. 3/ - Combarieu, J. - Histoire de la musique. Paris, Armand Colin, 1913-1919. 3 volumes in-8, brown half-maroquin, spine ribbed and decorated, covers and spine preserved, gilt heads, a few pencil lines in the first volume - X, 651 pp, [1 p.]; [2 ff.], 703 pp; VI, 667 pp, music notated in text. This work, by Jules Comarieu (1859-1916), who taught music history at the Collège de France and for a time directed the prestigious Revue musicale, was a landmark. A fine copy, very well bound. 4/ - Poirée, Élie. - Essais de technique & d'esthétique musicales. 650 musical notations. Le Discours musical: son principe, ses formes expressives. Preceded by a study of Wagner's "Maîtres Chanteurs". Paris, Henri Laurens, [1922].
