Description
Sowerby, James. - Ulva and Articulated Algae. S.l.n.d., [London, J. Sowerby]. In-8, bound in modern half calf, spine ribbed, author and title gilt. Collection, without title page, consisting of 169 engraved and coloured plates in fine condition apart from worm damage crossing the margin of 70 plates. A handwritten note, in ink, bound at the beginning of the volume indicates that the pencil indications are in the hand of Sowerby (?), the designer of the plates. At the bottom of most plates, the name of the printer is written as follows: "Published by JAS Sowerby, London", preceded by a date ranging from 1795 to 1814. The plates are numbered according to the index in Smith and Sowerby's English Gotany. A list of plates, printed in 2018 (4 pp. in-8), gives the numbering correspondences and synonyms between the different nomenclatures.
