Huysmans, Joris-Karl - Jouas, Charles. - La Cathédrale. Paris, Collection éclectique, A. Blaizot, René Kieffer, 1909. In-4 bound in full midnight blue morocco, first plate set with a copper plate, ribbed spine, titling in Gothic lettering, spine boards decorated with a broad midnight blue morocco listel with small dots framing, spandrels spandrelled with crosses pattées framing 2 different etchings printed in bistre on satin (Virgin and Child and Christ of the Apocalypse of the Royal Portal), double endpaper, covers and spine preserved, gilt head (binding René Kieffer). Ex-libris of Henri Bonnasse. Collection of 253 states of the 64 plates illustrating the work, without the text. The set is mounted on tabs. The plates printed in several states and on different papers are annotated in Jouas's hand (type of state, paper, etc.). Our count shows 78 prints in the first state, 75 in the second state, 68 in the third state, 21 in the fourth state and 11 plates modified and deleted. The paper used for the print runs varied: 61 were on Japon Ancien or Impérial and 57 plates were printed in bistre. For the record, plate 13 "Eglise St André vue des balcons de l'évêché" was redrawn at the bishop's request, as it featured a nun seated on the balcony of the bishop's bedroom. The copper plate on the binding is that on page 149 of the work and depicts the cathedral seen from the lower town with the Eure in the foreground. 2 separate coppers are included: "La porte Guillaume" and "l'ange au cadran". This is an exceptional document that allows us to follow the work of the engraver through the various stages of his oeuvre.
