35 volumes in folio, brown calf, ornate spines, title-pieces (period binding). First edition of the text of this famous work, the greatest achievement of printing in the service of French thought and technology. It consists of 17 volumes of text (1751-1765), 11 volumes of published plates (1762 to 1772), 5 volumes of supplements including 1 volume of plates (1776-1777) and 2 volumes of alphabetical tables (1780). Complete with frontispiece and 7 folding tables, including the large genealogical table (small tear not missing). The advertised number of plates is 3129 (including doubles and triples). Our complete collated copy has 2795 plates, including 304 doubles and 17 triples, i.e. 3133 plates according to the publisher's count. This discrepancy is due to several counting errors in the plates listed.
Good general condition of text and plates except for the last 12 plates of T VI affected by marginal wetness; 42 headpieces are faded or nicked; 4 jaws are cracked, epidermis on boards with a few piercings; a few small scattered wormholes in margins. Excellent printing of the deep black plates.
