[Unica] - Huysmans, Joris-Karl - Jouas, Charles. - La Cathédrale. Paris, Collection Éclectique, A. Blaizot, René Kieffer, 1909. Two volumes in-4 for the text and one volume in-folio for the drawings and plates, bound in full green morocco with blue highlights (binding René Kieffer). Ex-libris of Henri Bonnasse.
The boards of the text volumes are decorated with a large mosaic floral motif in hazelnut, fawn, beige and green morocco, set in a quadruple gilt double fillet frame, stamped at the head with 2 gilt double-framed rosettes and, at the base, with a gilt rosette, spine ribbed with a repeat of the mosaic floral motif and gilt titling, Coat of arms at foot, green morocco listel on spine flaps, double framed with gilt fillets, enclosing 2 etchings by Jouas printed in bistre on satin (Virgin and Child and Christ of the Apocalypse from the Royal Portal), covers and spines preserved, gilt heads, shaped and edged slipcases - [2 ff., fx-title, title], 166 pp; [2 ff. fx-title, title], 167-359 pp, [1 p. completed]. Illustrated with 64 original etchings printed in bistre, including 16 h-t. Edition of 250 copies, this one on vellum "printed for Count Jean de Nadaillac owner of the original drawings by Ch. Jouas" containing 3 states of the etchings (pure etching and etching in black with remarks and final state in sepia).
The boards of the plate volume are decorated with a quintuple gilt frame (3 fillets and 2 strings of dots), spandrelled with 4 large mosaic floral motifs in hazel, fawn and beige morocco, representing lilies. The coat of arms is stamped in the centre. The spine is adorned with the same decoration, doubled in hazelnut morocco with multiple gilt frames and 6 mosaic floral decorations (pale green and grey) on the corners and sides, surrounded by a fine listel of blue and grey morocco, leather endpapers decorated with a floral motif, double guard, covers preserved, gilt head, plates mounted on mitre, shaped and edged case.
The cover is titled "Exemplaire unique contenant les dessins originaux de Charles Jouas et la suite des planches avant l'aciérage".
This volume contains 80 folio-sized coloured pencil drawings (16 initials and 64 plates) and the suite of 64 etchings printed before the steeling of the copperplates.
An exceptional set celebrating the cathedral and its author at the height of his mastery of drawing and engraving, in Art Nouveau bindings.
