[Manuscript]. Humphrys, Henry. - A plan of mathematical learning, taught in the royal academy Portsmouth, 1789. 1 vol. in-folio bound in seeded calf, framed with roulette, spine ribbed and decorated. - Upper spine split along its entire length, weakening the upper cover, corners pierced, numerous scuff marks on the covers, the first quire is unbound. - 3 ff.], 475 pp, numerous figures in the text, 27 landscapes painted in grey wash forming the frontispiece to each chapter, 1 view of the Portsmouth Academy, 5 maps, 2 of which are folding. This large volume was compiled and calligraphed by a student of the Royal Academy of Portsmouth. It covers virtually all the subjects taught at the academy, including arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, geography, chronology, navigation, astronomy, latitudes and longitudes, coastal surveillance, fortification, ballistics and mechanics, all of which constitute a vade mecum for future officers of the Royal Navy. The landscapes that open each chapter are little jewels of finesse, as are the coloured nautical charts, of which the large map of the North Atlantic is the centrepiece.
