Description
Philip III king of Spain. - Carta executoria or letters of nobility granted by Philip III of Spain to Gabriel de Villapadierna, Medina del Campo, 1603. In-folio bound in havana calf, covers framed with five roulettes surrounding a central rectangle occupied by a large lozenge bordered with small irons representing fleurs-de-lys alternating with hearts. Fans occupy the spandrels, gilt edges. - Joints rubbed and slightly split at tail, small leather gaps on spine, binding probably repaired. - 55 vellum pages with 28 lines in a frame bordered by a double fillet. - The manuscript opens, as is customary for this type of document, with two full-page illuminations. The one on the left depicts a gentleman presented by an angel, with his wife and son, praying before the Virgin and Child, shrouded in golden rays, seated on a throne of clouds and surrounded by a rosary. The scene is framed by a wide border of flowers, fruit, angels and birds. The right-hand page shows the coat of arms of the Villapadierna family, surrounded by a wide border of military trophies. At the end of the manuscript are numerous signatures of witnesses who attested to the applicant's nobility. Gabriel de Villapadierna owned a castle near Medina de Rioseco in the province of Valladolid.
