Description
[Unica] - Huysmans, Joris-Karl - Jouas, Charles. - Le Quartier Notre-Dame. Paris, Librairie de la Collection des Dix, A. Romagnol, 1905. In-8 (large format) bound in full wine-leather morocco, the boards decorated with a double frame of cold-stamped fillets and mosaic motifs in brown morocco imitating ironwork extending from the 2 spine nerves, the latter decorated with 2 small brown mosaic motifs of stylized bats. Counter-papers decorated with a large listel of wine-leather morocco decorated with a triple framing of gilt fillets spaced with gilt stylized bats, the centre of the counter-paper and the first free endpaper lined with red silk with floral decoration, double end-papers, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed copy, shaped and bordered slipcase (rel. R. Kieffer). Bookplate of Henri Bonnasse - [3 ff, blank, fx-title, title], 36 pp, [1 f. completed]. Illustrated with a frontispiece-title, 10 h-t, 20 in-t, a chapter headband and a cul-de-lampe. Edition of 350 copies, this being one of 20 large-format copies on Japon paper containing the etchings in three states: the pure etching, the intermediate state, both with remarks, and the final state. In this unica, the 33 etchings in the final state were watercoloured by Jouas for his friend Porcaboeuf. This copy is enriched with an original watercolour by Jouas (an alternative proposal for the frontispiece-title), an original coloured pencil portrait of the artist by himself, a portrait of Huysmans dedicated to Porcaboeuf and a fine autograph letter signed on a blank sheet "Le travail, c'est du péché en moins".
