Flament (the print run is not known, but must not have exceeded by much the number of 800 subscribers). A spectacular work, one of Curmer's most impressive. The chromolithographs reproduce illuminations taken from ancient manuscripts, with exceptional finish and precision. In addition to the photoglyphic vignettes (Curmer was one of the pioneers of photographic reproduction), the second volume stands out for the quality of its documentary apparatus: notes on the breviary of Cardinal Grimani, which Curmer used extensively for this edition, on the monogram of Christ, on the Dance of the Dead, and on the various painters whose works were reproduced in the work, such as Martin Schon, the Master of 1466, Memling and Foucquet. Most of this volume is devoted to explaining the ornamentation of this appendix. Interesting list of subscribers headed by Napoléon III, Eugénie and part of the imperial family, the Pope, several European sovereigns, numerous French and foreign booksellers, as well as Amédée Achard, Virginie Déjazet, Mgr Falloux, Jules Janin and E. Montégut. A good copy of this remarkable edition.
