Description
Le Sacre de Louis XV Roy de France et de Navarre dans l'église de Reims le dimanche XXV octobre 1722. [Paris], s.n., [1731]. In full, bound in blue-green half-maroquin with double gilt fillet underlining, spine ribbed with 5 boxes decorated with large fleurs-de-lis and spandrels with the same small flowers, gilt head (binding H. Vincent, successor of Dupré). Ex libris Alfred Dailly.
Published by three members of the Académie française: the polygraph Antoine Danchet, who wrote the texts, the abbot Jean-Paul Bignon and Claude Gros de Boze. The plates were produced by Audran, Beauvais, Cochin père, Desplaces, Duchange, Dupuis, Larmessin, Tardieu, Edelinck, Chereau, Drevet, Haussard and Petit. The ornaments, frames, vignettes, headpieces, fleurons and end-pieces were engraved by d'Ulin.
The work, which is entirely engraved and mitre-mounted, comprises 74 pages with decorative frames. Printed on Japon paper.
Contents: title-frontispiece, 2 ff. of text, 9 double plates representing the various scenes of the coronation from the rising of the King to the royal feast, accompanied by 11 ff. of text and 9 ff. with large allegorical vignettes with explanatory text to complete each of the double plates, 30 single plates giving the King's clothing and that of the various characters taking part in the ceremonial, 2 ff. of table and 1 f. giving the names of the painters and engravers who took part in this work.
Very good condition inside. One of the most beautiful engraved books of the 18th century.
