Description
[L'office de la semaine saincte selon le messel et breviaire romain, imprimé par le commandement de Pie V et reveu par l'auctorité de Clément VIII et corrigé de nouveau de l'auctorité d'Urbain VIII. Paris, André Soubron, 1659. In-8, bound in full red morocco, spine ribbed, entrenerfs with the MTA cipher of Maria Theresa of Austria, Queen of France. Alternating fleur-de-lys on the boards. In the centre, the arms of a Duke of Orléans surrounded by the collars of the Order of Saint-Michel and the Order of the Holy Spirit and surmounted by the ducal crown. Lace framing the boards, gilt edges. - Corners slightly bent, one corner pierced, jaws tired, covers slightly rubbed and stained. - 528 pp, signed A-KK8. - 4 pll. in-t signed François du Bois, 2 pll. h-t signed J. Callot, vignette to title. - Elg Joseph Ruston, Monks Manor Lincoln, 1895. - The binding bears both the cipher of Queen Marie-Thérèse, Louis XIV's wife in 1660, and the arms of a Duke of Orléans, who may be either Gaston d'Orléans, who died in 1661, or Philippe d'Orléans, Louis XIV's brother, which would be more likely. We do not know the circumstances that brought these two people together in the same binding.
