ANONYMOUS (Translated by Galland) – The Thousand and One Nights. Paris, Lugan, 1826; small 12mo, approximately 4,000 pp., black half-calf bindings, smooth spines, marbled edges. All 12 volumes. A fine edition, with a preface by Galland. This text is Galland’s translation from the Arabic, though the oral tradition from which it derives originates in Persia and India. Galland’s translation was produced at the very beginning of the 18th century. He wrote it himself, drawing on the manuscript. He added Sinbad the Sailor, who was not part of the original text but was included in the manuscript. Illustrated with 12 engravings (one frontispiece per volume). Good condition.
