Description
BOUHOURS (Dominique) – Ingenious Thoughts of the Ancients and Moderns. The Hague: Published by Jean Van Duren, 1735; in-12, VI-333 pp. + table of contents, contemporary full speckled calf binding, spine decorated with five raised bands, title label in red morocco, edges painted red, title label missing. Text written by Dominique Bouhours, who was a brilliant mind of the 17th century. A Jesuit, he moved in the most distinguished circles of high society. As for ‘Ingenious Reflections on the Ancients and the Moderns’, this refers to a famous controversy initiated by Perrault, who believed that the age of Louis XIV was ideal, even when compared to antiquity. The ‘Ancients’, represented by Boileau and Racine, believed that antiquity was the golden age, in contrast to the age of Louis XIV: something of a ‘Paradise Lost’. In good condition.
