Description
DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU (Henri Louis) – A Treatise on Fruit Trees; containing their illustrations, descriptions, cultivation, &c. Paris, published by Saillant & Desaint, 1768; folio, frontispiece, XXXII-338 + 280 pp., contemporary marbled full calf bindings, spines decorated with five raised bands, title labels in red morocco, gilt edges, fillets on the covers. Both volumes. First edition. Frontispiece by De Seve and 180 plates. This work deals not only with fruit trees, but also with strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant plants, and vines. It is therefore almost more a treatise on the orchard than on trees strictly speaking. A fine copy. Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau, born in 1700 and died in 1782, was a French physicist, botanist and agronomist. A member of the Royal Academy of Sciences from 1738, to which he was elected President on three occasions, he left behind a significant body of work as a scientific writer in fields as varied as shipbuilding and naval operations, fishing, the cultivation and preservation of wheat, and forest management. Appointed Inspector-General of the Navy in 1739, he founded a naval academy in 1741, which became the School of Naval Architects in 1765. Continuing Réaumur’s work, he revived the *Description des Arts et Métiers* in 1757 and opposed both the Encyclopaedists and Buffon.
