Description
HERODOTUS – The History of Herodotus, translated from the Greek by M. Larcher. Paris, Musier & Nyon, 1786; 8vo, LXXXIV-516 + 522 + 499 + 443 + 509 + 600 + 572 pp., contemporary marbled full calf bindings, spines decorated with 5 raised bands, painted edges, fillets on the covers, title labels in green morocco. All 7 volumes. Very fine condition. First edition of this translation. Larcher’s most important work is his translation of Herodotus (1786), one of the finest early translations, on which he worked for fifteen years; it is particularly valued for its historical, geographical and chronological notes, a highly interesting index of the authors and editions Larcher drew upon, and above all an ‘Essay on the Chronology of Herodotus’ containing a general chronology of political and cultural events from the origins of Egypt up to around 221. This chronology served as the basis for historical research for many years. Cioranescu, 18°, no. 37082.
