Description
LE SUEUR (Eustache), CHAVUEAU (François) – The Life of St Bruno, Founder of the Carthusian Order, depicted in the cloister of the Chartreuse of Paris. Paris, published by the widow of F. Chereau, 1660; small folio, 22 plates, 19th-century brown half-calf binding, plain spine with decoration. 22 plates by Eustache Le Sueur, engraved by François Chaveau. Between 1645 and 1648, Le Sueur painted the cycle depicting the life of Saint Bruno, a series of 22 canvases commissioned to adorn the cloister of the Chartreuse de Paris. In these works, Le Sueur established his own distinctive style, drawing on the classicism of Poussin and his master, Simon Vouet. These paintings were later purchased by Louis XVI in 1776. They are now in the Louvre. François Chauveau was one of the most illustrious French engravers of the 17th century, one of the four engravers mentioned by Charles Perrault in his *Hommes illustres*, and one of the leading practitioners of the etching technique.
