Description
[MANUSCRIPT] - Essay on a dictionary of terms relating to military architecture, warfare, etc. No place, published by the author, 1740; folio, approximately 400 pp., in a full marbled sheepskin binding of the period, with a plain, ribbed spine. A work on military matters illustrated with numerous sketches depicting various troop formations, fortifications, mines, howitzers, cannons, defensive weapons, firecrackers and other festivities. Very fine handwriting; the date 25 August 1740 appears at the beginning of the text. A highly accomplished dictionary project, followed by a few scattered notes; the author studied Polybius and numerous ancient texts in Rollin’s translation. He researched the tactics of figures from antiquity, ranging from Darius and Alexander the Great right up to Henry IV, Alexander Farnese and Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine, who is mentioned in the text concerning the siege of Brisach. Possibly from Lorraine.
