Description
LIEURE (Jules) – Jacques Callot. Catalogue of Engravings. Paris, Gazette des Beaux-Arts, 1929; large quarto, approximately 2000 pp., in the publisher’s full brown cloth bindings, plain spines, green leather title labels. The definitive reference work on Callot’s oeuvre: first edition published in Paris between 1924 and 1927. Volume I lists the complete body of engraved works. Volume II lists all the plates, numbering 1,428. Jacques Callot was born in Nancy in 1592. His work is unique in the history of engraving. It is infinitely varied. It encompasses every genre, ranging from religious subjects, historical subjects and studies of manners to depictions of hunchbacks, characters from the Italian Commedia dell’Arte, and the devils in *The Temptation of Saint Anthony*. Callot was truly the engraver of his age. More than any other, it can be said that he embodied his era in every respect. Life in the early 17th century is better described by his works than by the writings of his contemporaries. He recounts the history of the reign of Louis XIII with a level of detail that no historian has ever provided. The misfortunes of war are depicted in a masterful series known throughout the world. Callot bequeathed to the artists of his time and to those who followed him a wealth of subjects, compositions and characters; an infinite array of details, always picturesque, from which they drew extensively, very often without acknowledging or admitting it. He made a contribution to French art through a body of work brimming with life and interest, which made him famous in his own time. Thanks to this work, he remains to this day the most popular of all our French engravers. The 5 volumes.
