Description
ERCKMANN-CHATRIAN – A Complete Collection of National and Folk Tales and Novels. Paris, Hetzel, 1867; quarto, approximately 400 pp., publisher’s full cloth binding by Magnier, plain spine, front cover adorned with a medallion, one joint completely split and the upper cap in need of restoration. Erckmann-Chatrian is the pen name used by these two writers from Lorraine: Émile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian. Erckmann was born in Phalsbourg, Chatrian in Abreschviller. The two writers collaborated from 1850 to 1885. In fact, following their joint collaboration, Erckmann wrote mainly novels, whilst Chatrian focused on theatre. Numerous black-and-white illustrations, both as inserts and within the text, by Théophile Schuler, engraved by Pannemaker. In good condition despite the noted defects.
