[MAHN] - DUHAMEL (Georges) - Midnight Confessions. Paris, Henri Jonquières, publisher, 1926; in-4, 189 pp., binding by Trinckvel in full red morocco, spine decorated with four raised bands, gilt head, fillets and mosaic on the covers, interior with double endpapers and a bordered slipcase. A numbered copy on Montgolfier vellum paper with illustrations by Berthold Mahn. Georges Duhamel was a French writer and doctor. He was elected to the Académie française in 1935. He served as a doctor during the First World War. He subsequently published *La Chronique des Pasquiers*. He was awarded the Prix Goncourt on 11 December 1918 for his work *Civilisation*. He is regarded as a forerunner of the existentialists. From 1940 onwards, some of his work was banned by the Germans. He appeared on the Otto List and was no longer able to publish anything. However, he deliberately remained in Paris and stood up to the occupying forces. He was subjected to virulent attacks in the newspaper *Je suis partout*. Nevertheless, he protested against the excesses of the purge. We need to rediscover Georges Duhamel, as he has been forgotten and gone out of fashion, even though his work is humanist and socially engaged.
