First edition of ‘the most sumptuous, comprehensive and accurate work published to date on Spain’ (Milliard).
An account of the journey undertaken by the archaeologist and politician Alexandre de Laborde (1773–1842) between 1796 and 1806, when he accompanied Lucien Bonaparte on his diplomatic mission to Charles IV. An artist himself, Alexandre de Laborde surrounded himself with a team of 21 artists, including Jacques Moulinier and François Ligier, assisted by 30 Parisian engravers, to produce the work’s extensive illustrations. Based on an encyclopaedic concept that is at once scientific, historical and artistic, this heritage catalogue comprises over 350 illustrations; this copy contains 290 plates (out of the 292 expected) and two fold-out maps.
