HISTORY] HOTMAN (François)/De MATHAREL] Matagonis de Matagonibus, a bachelor of decrees, *Monitoriale adversus italogalliam sive antifrancogalliam*, n.p., 1578, followed by *Strigilis papirii massoni sive remediale charitativum contra rabiosam frenesim papirii massoni iesvitae excucullati*, n.p., 1578 A Warning Letter by Matagon of Matagon, Bachelor of Canon Law, against Italogallia or Anti-Francogallia; followed by *The Grooming Comb of Papirius Massonus* or *A Charitable Remedy against the Rabid Frenzy of the Defrocked Jesuit Papirius Massonus*. Two works in one 12mo volume bound in full parchment, comprising 82 pages (2 blank pages), 35 pages A collection of two satirical pamphlets by the Calvinist humanist and jurist François Hotman, published under a pseudonym, written in response to attacks on his 1573 political treatise *Franco-Gallia*, composed in reaction to the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, in which he proposed a representative government and a non-hereditary monarchy. The first text is directed against the lawyer Antoine Matharel, (1537–1586), a French writer and author of a defence of royal and Italian politics in France, who sought to dismantle Hotman’s reasoning and whom Hotman, derisively, renamed *Italogallia* or *Antifrancogallia*. The second text is directed against the writer and polemicist Papire Masson (1544–1611), a writer, historian and lawyer, who had come to Matharel’s defence and attacked Hotman. Attached to the volume are two handwritten folios, signed by Matharel and dated 1891, listing all instances of the name ‘Matharel’ in the text. Significant water damage extending across the entire volume. From the descendants of the Matharel family, Usson
