MEDICINE] BY SAINT-MARTHE (Abel and Scévole)] The Art of Breastfeeding Children, a translation of a Latin poem by Scévole de Saint-Marthe, Paris, Guillaume de Luyne, Claude Barbin, Laurent d’Houry, 1698 One in-4 volume in full calfskin comprising (4), (20) pages of preface, epistle, approval and 135 pages, (1) First edition of the French translation by Abel II de Sainthe-Marthe (1626–1707) of the famous Latin poem by his grandfather Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (1536–1623), entitled *Pædotrophiæ*, in which he discusses the care to be given to children, the medical knowledge to be applied in their care, advice such as that on breastfeeding, education, games… The Latin text is set in italics alongside the French translation. Hand-drawn bookplate by Dr Ranson. Split spine. Dulled corners. Interior in fresh condition.
