HISTORY/REVOLUTION] A collection of documents comprising: - SOULE (François)] Le vade-vecum parlementaire or The Parliamentary Pocket-Book, by Mr S***, London, Paris, Published by Novelty Booksellers, 1789. One in-8 volume, paperback, with a temporary cover of 89 pages, (1) First edition of this rare parliamentary handbook, published simultaneously in London and Paris by François Soulés (1748–1809), a journalist, historian and translator. A bilingual handbook on the constitution, laws and procedures of the British Parliament. The title refers to Thomas Jefferson’s manuscript, the ‘Parliamentary Pocket-Book’, compiled during his stay in Paris. In March 1789, Soulés corresponded with Jefferson regarding this work, citing it in his enquiries about the property qualifications required to sit in the House of Commons. Jefferson replied in detail, correcting Soulés’s references, and this correspondence has been preserved. Modern scholars have often noted the confusion between Jefferson’s private ‘Pocket-Book’ and Soulés’s printed ‘Vade-Mecum’. This handbook bears witness both to the French fascination with English constitutionalism and to the spread of parliamentary knowledge across Europe in the late 18th century.
